About

10425866_10204185753508647_315711484772659127_nAlcohol Cats is a blog where I talk about any and all issues relating to cats, with a particular focus on the stray and shelter population—a population that I believe is often underrepresented.

I am owned by three shelter alum. Smirnoff and Bacardi, who were both adopted from the Animal Rescue League of Boston, were adopted in May 2010 and January 2011, respectively. Hence the name “Alcohol Cats”. And no, those weren’t their names at the shelter. Smirnoff got his name due to his love of chasing bottle caps (Smirnoff Ice bottle caps were what started it all) and Bacardi somewhat resembles the black bat logo of Bacardi Rum. Then, in January 2014, I adopted a pixie-vampire-looking kitten named Warlow from Best Friends Animal Society – Los Angeles. Warlow no longer looks like a pixie-vampire, but the name stuck.

As for shelter life…

From 2010 to 2013, I  spent about 6–8 hours each week volunteering at the Animal Rescue League of Boston helping to socialize, rehabilitate, and adopt out amazing cats. To see where these cats come from, what they go through, and where they end up is a truly educational experience—both the cats that make it and the ones that don’t.

Now, I work for Best Friends Animal Society in Los Angeles. From August 2013 – March 2015, I worked as an adoption specialist, and now I work as the foster program coordinator. I also spend time volunteering with Heaven on Earth Society for Animals, a no-kill cat sanctuary in Van Nuys, CA.

Smirnoff, Bacardi, and Warlow, along with my volunteer work at the ARL, my job at Best Friends, and my experience with so many hard-working organizations, are what inspire me to be a more cat-savvy owner and advocate.

  1. LOVE your blog! I own 6 cats, all but one are rescues and/or fosters (Yes I am a foster flunky) and I make automatic monthly donations to ARLB and Neponset Valley Humane Society. 🙂

  2. Adopting is the way to go all my animals have been rescued. Right how the house is full of 7 cats 1 dog and a fish 😀 It is brilliant that you are promoting it and good luck with helping all them unwanted’s in the world x

  3. I follow you for some time now, love to read about your successes. But this is a comment meant as a cry for help.
I have heard about a needy adult cat – needy of a new home. I am based in Germany and cannot do anything for this lovely male cat, but maybe you have connections? My heart aches when I read his story and the updates. Tigger is 10, very human friendly – but cannot stay with other cats.
